Sup Gaijin?

We all know you live in Japan, but I want to know how you got there, and what you're doing there.  Take it from the top!

Re: Sup Gaijin?

Soooooo I wish my story were more interesting.  Basically I just went to college after high school and then straight after graduating, I got a job teaching in Japan.  That's the super-abridged version.

Below is the slightly less abridged version...

I grew up bored in Podunk, USA, deciding that I'd get out of my crappy state no matter what.  I couldn't afford out-of-state tuition, so I studied in South America for a semester and loved it, which made me more determined to get out.  I'd become extremely interested in different cultures and excited just to have new experiences in new places with different people.  While finishing up my degree, I was wondering how I could use it to work abroad, and I heard about a really good program for getting you set up to teach English in Japan.  Sounded a little over my head at the time, since I had no experience with the language, little knowledge about Japanese history and culture, and very little experience teaching.  But at the last minute I decided to go for it, and I rushed to get my application sent out just in time.  For some reason it didn't occur to me to apply anywhere else as a backup.  I didn't have any professional recommendations; it was so rushed I couldn't even get my school advisor to write me a rec.  But regardless, I secured an interview and eventually got accepted, and a few months later I was in Japan.  So yeah... that was a few years ago.  And still here I am.

Word.

Re: Sup Gaijin?

Ufff been crazy busy lately.

I went to Chile for a (study abroad) semester in uni.  I'd chosen Spanish as my minor, but I realized that even, what, 3-4 years(?) of classroom learning wouldn't be very useful, so I figured I should immerse myself if I wanted to actually be able to do anything with it.  But I never did do anything with it anyway, so I've lost a lot of the Spanish that I picked up there cos it's been so long.  But on a positive note, the other day I started reading The Alchemist in Spanish, and it's actually not as bad as I had feared.  But I did read it once before in English.  Is that cheating?

What I'm going to do next... god... I really just don't know, thanks for reminding me.  I have a few ideas.  One involves the Peace Corps.  I'd love to go back to Latin America and actually get pretty fluent in Spanish.  Also not a bad thing to have on your CV, and it's really helpful for getting a pretty decent government job.  Oh, and, um, helping people is cool too.  I was also thinking of getting certified to be a teacher, but I don't that'd be very fulfilling and the pay is crap.  It's just a pretty easy thing to get into.  Other ideas involve looking for work in the States and applying for grad school, likely something that will keep me traveling.  Kind of interested in the idea of getting into social work.  But what I'd really like to do is to make a living in the music industry and, somehow, eventually support myself as a musician.  But I'm not sure how practical that is.

You'd think that I'd have this pretty much figured out as I approach the big three-zero.  Maybe one of these days I'll grow up.

As for my face, well.. my mum tells me I'm handsome.  So I must be.  She wouldn't lie to me, right?

Are you deaf, or just hard of hearing?  Are you secretly Smoundzou's son?

Some basics. I'm learning though. My loss is progressive, so I will need it eventually...
