BCAAs are one of the best supplements you can take for recovery and staying on the right track so you can reach your fitness goals.
One popular BCAA powder we’re going to be looking at today is Gold Standard (Train + Recover) by Optimum Nutrition.
The Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard BCAA is a powder-based supplement that features a 2:1:1 ratio of;
- and valine.
It differs from many of the other BCAA supplements on the market as it contains an electrolyte blend and several ingredients shown to improve performance and recovery.
Optimum Nutrition claims that Gold Standard BCAA was designed to protect your hard-earned muscle during intense training while kickstarting the muscle recovery and growth process post-workout.
You can find a month supply of Gold Standard BCAA for $29.99 on the Optimum Nutrition website as well as Bodybuilding.com.
Amazon has the cheaper offer at $22.99 here but after shipping it will work out to be about the same price.
Since it’s the same price, I recommend going directly through ON as you’ll often receive bonuses such as coupons and supplement samples.
Here’s what we’re going to cover in this review:
Ingredients of Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard BCAA
Optimum Nutrition includes far more in their BCAA supplement than most other companies, but is it all worth it?
Let’s take a look at the Gold Standard BCAA formula:
BCAA Blend (L-Leucine, L-Isoleucine, L-Valine): The Gold Standard BCAA contains the scientifically recommended serving of 2.5 grams of leucine, 1.25 grams of isoleucine, and 1.25 grams of valine.
This ratio of BCAAs has been shown to reduce exercise fatigue, spike protein synthesis, promote muscle growth, and prevent muscle breakdown. (1)
Electrolyte Blend (Magnesium, Sodium, Potassium): Electrical messengers required for muscle contraction, electrolytes are quickly depleted during high intensity workouts, resulting in that infamous mid-workout crash.
Gold Standard BCAA contains the three most important electrolytes to support performance and recovery. (2)
Vitamin C: Considered a powerful antioxidant, vitamin C helps to prevent the immunosuppression or stress on the immune system that occurs during exercise.
It’s also been shown to reduce post-workout muscle damage. (3)
Wellmune® (Bakers Yeast Beta Glucan): Similar to vitamin C, Wellmune® has been shown to prevent immunosuppression from high intensity workouts.
This can help with post-workout recovery and lowering the risk for illness such as the common cold. (4)
Rhodiola Extract: Another herbal remedy to take to prevent the common cold, rhodiola extract has also been shown to increase intra-workout endurance.
Studies show that subjects supplementing with rhodiola were able to perform more sets and repetitions over the course of four weeks than their placebo-taking counterparts. (5)
Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard BCAA Reviews
Optimum Nutrition is one of the veterans of the supplement industry, so they have had decades to perfect their formulas.
Their innovation shows with the Gold Standard BCAA, resulting in plenty of satisfied customers.
Even the science and research behind the supplement isn’t lost on the ON fanbase.
The most common compliments given to Gold Standard BCAA revolve around better workout performance and faster recovery, which isn’t surprising since those are two proven benefits of using BCAAs.
The Bad: No great supplement is absent of a few negative reviews.
The most common complaints you’ll hear about Gold Standard BCAA are with its flavor and mixability.
I would say there are two simple solutions:
First, don’t buy the odd-ball flavors.
Rarely does a supplement get it right with watermelon, cranberry, or kiwi.
The fruit punch flavor has long been mastered and Gold Standard BCAA offers this flavor.
As for mixability, try a shaker with a mixing ball.
Those supplement clumps can be stubborn but it’s nothing a blender or a shaker with a mixing ball can’t handle.
The Gold Standard BCAA Bottom Line
I can’t recommend Gold Standard BCAA enough.
- You can order it on Amazon here.
It goes above and beyond what the rest of the supplement market is doing.
Not only do they use the scientific standard for BCAA dosing, but they also include several other proven ingredients to ensure better workout performance, faster recovery, and results.
If you’re picky about flavors, stick with the classic, Fruit Punch.
